Meet the Retreat Leadership Team
My name is Arsheen, I was born and raised in Canada and I have lived in Toronto, on and off, for the past 15 years. I am very excited and honoured to be part of this retreat and hope to learn a lot and make some great connection and relationships.

A real passion of mine is to reflect and discuss the meaning of life and the Qur'an, specifically its relevance and application in our lives today. I also enjoy talking about "Identity" and what it's like to be a Western Muslim.

I am a mother of two, an avid reader, and I love to meet new people and make a difference.

I also have a masters degree in Islamic Studies.
My name is Mehreen. Sharing and caring are two of my greatest passions. I am honored to be part of this retreat for these reasons.

I have been in Canada for almost 12 years and have learned a lot about self-discipline, self development and building the capacity to thrive through my life experiences.

I believe that all of life experiences are remarkable and that there is always something to learn. If we train our minds, we can overcome and actually turn a negative situation into a positive one.

I have a bachelors degree in science and a diploma in office administration.
My name is KulsoomI moved to Canada from Pakistan at the age of 10 and have lived in Toronto since. I have a passion for empowering people by seeing where they can make shifts in their own attitudes which help shape how they show up in the world. My hope is to help people see things in a different perspective when their own perspectives might be limiting their growth and confidence.

I feel we are truly blessed to have some strong leaders and a community that is open to listening and evolving to meet the needs of our children, the future of this community.

I am a mother of three and am currently working on my Holistic Nutritionist certification. I have a bachelors in Economics from the University of Toronto.
This program is meant for Muslim girls who are in their adolescence and early teens and who:

-Want to make genuine connections and meet new people.
-Are interested in excelling in life as leaders in the making.
-Want to have an enjoyable experience with friends, doing amazing activities.
-Want to increase their self confidence in an encouraging, positive environment.
-Are interested in becoming more comfortable with who they are and having the confidence to act according to what they know is right.
-Want to learn and adopt some of the most effective habits of successful people.

This is what participants will come out of the program with:

-Increased self-esteem and confidence in order to be who they are
-Improved interpersonal communication and people skills
-Consciousness of how great leaders think and act
-A deeper connection to nature with increased wilderness survival skills
-Great friendships and bonds with others who will be allies for years to come
Working with youth has shown us that youth face the great challenge of a fear of REJECTION everyday. It is as if the cause of all other fears - Failure, Being Left Behind, Judgement. Because of this fear, some youth take on the image of being tough and put others down, while others follow everyone else because they don't want to stick out and be made an example of. Unfortunately, for many, this results in an adolescent culture of competition, judgement and disrespectful conduct, which can be overcome or avoided through consciousness and decisions to have act according to higher values.
This is why being around the right kinds of people and having the right mindset is extremely important, especially at this young age.

Consciousness of your IDENTITY ends up being the key factor in choosing who to hang out with and what to stand up for.
The people we hang around ultimately influence our decisions - good and bad.
By registering your daughter for this program, you are improving their chances for increased positivity, character building, confidence and connection with other young ladies who will have similar values - collectively encouraging one another to stick to their values and achieve better results.
Listening Connects
My name is Sajid Alimohamed. I am a leadership coach and facilitator and the founder of Listening Connects. I grew up in Toronto, Canada.

I am proud to be running this leadership retreat for the girls of our Muslim community. They need our support more than we know it. These program make a huge difference and go a long way in building connection and community while developing future leaders - leaders who will courageously create spaces for meaningful dialogue and positive change.

I have a vast amount of experience working with youth including facilitating retreats across North America for approximately seven years and then becoming a professional coach and facilitator running my own leadership organization.

Though I will not be involved in the delivery of this program first hand, your daughters will be in great care. Arsheen, Mehreen and Kulsoom and all loving mothers who understand the importance of building connection and community through breaking down mental and emotional barriers and judgements and increasing emotional intelligence.

For me, if it wasn't for the Muslim camps and retreats that I attended as a young adult, I would likely have continued to hang out with the wrong people and made a number of incorrect life decisions that unfortunately prove to haunt so many others.

I feel that it is part of my duty to share what I have learned and give what I can in this world. I invite you to contact me personally if you have any questions regarding this retreat and other programs.

Will any men be present?

This program will be run by women only. All indoor discussions and activities will only involve women.
Outdoor activities will be run by women, however, there is a chance that men/boys may be may be within visible range as there is the potential of other groups running programs on the property.

How Islamic will this retreat be?

This is a retreat for Muslim girls. Accordingly the teachings of the Qur'an and the Ahlul Bayt will be promoted and practiced throughout the retreat. Participants will be involved in prayers, Qur'anic reflections, building connection between our Creator, His creations and our significance in the scheme of life, and actively practicing the morals and ethics that are promoted within an ideal Islamic environment - kindness, sisterhood and genuine compassion for one another.

What specific physical activities are planned for the weekend?

Activities may include all or some of dynamic leadership group activites, low-ropes group challenges, outdoor survival skills including building shelters and campfires, and a look into astronomy.

Will there be trained supervisors and teachers for all outdoor activities?

Yes. There will be trained supervisors and/or facilitators for all outdoor activities.  Lake St. George offers day camps and school programs for children and youth throughout the year.  Their staff are trained and certified. YMCA, TDSB and YRDSB and other children and youth groups partner with the Lake St. George Field Centre to enhance their program offerings.  Likewise, during this program the staff of Lake St. George will be heavily involved in rolling out and supervising the available activities.

What are accomodations like?

Participants and volunteers will be staying in one residence building that is complete with a common area, and rooms that cater to 2 to 5 participants per room.  Bathrooms are shared and showers are enclosed for privacy.
Sleeping stations of adults and volunteers will be closest to the exit doors to ensure the safety and security of the participants after lights out.
A list of everything and anything a participant would need to bring in terms of linens, blankets, pillows, will be provided in a separate email as the event date approaches.

My daughter has a lot of food allergies. Will you be able to accomodate?

All registrants will be sent a medical and allergy form to inform us of their needs. The kitchen will be informed and will make necessary arrangements to accomodate.

My child will be turning 12 just a few days after the retreat.  Can she register?
